Directions
Latitude: 45, 42, 47.65 N Longitude: 113, 52, 48.56 W 25 miles west of Wisdom, Montana on Hwy 43.
Access 1 - Highway 43 chain-up parking at Richardson Creek. This parking area opened in 2007 is the primary access route to Hogan Cabin and is regularly plowed by the State of Montana, DOT. The parking is located about 3.9 miles east of Chief Joseph Pass. Shoofly Trail #101B leaves this chain-up parking area and heads east and then north. This is the shortest route to Hogan Cabin and is also the most difficult and is approximately 3 miles to the cabin. The trail is marked with wands in the snow and blue diamonds in the forested areas. Under poor snow conditions the original Shoefly Trail can be a challenge to inexperienced skiers. The Shoofly Cutoff or alternate trail was marked to provide a less steep route to and from Hogan Cabin. Both trails are marked with Blue Diamonds. Snowmobiles can use portions of the Shoefly trail however it is not a popular snowmobile area.
Access 2 - Chief Joseph Pass Nordic Ski Trails. Hogan Cabin can be reached in two ways starting at the Chief Joseph Pass Parking lot. The first route follows Broadway Trail north for a mile; leave the Nordic ski area and proceed directly north to Forest Service road 1260. Follow road 1260 north east approximately 2 miles to road 1260 C. A green gate is located at the top of 1260 C. Road 1260C runs down hill about 0.6 miles directly to Hogan Cabin. Once you leave the Nordic ski area the roads are shared with snowmobiles. The second route leaves the north east corner Nordic trail system near Windy Corner (see Chief Joseph trail map). Skiers travel a short distance off the groomed trails on road then turn onto the ungroomed Scooter Trail which takes you to the mid point on the Shoefly Trail. After leaving the Nordic ski trail system it is about 2 miles on the Scooter trail to the Shoefly Trail, then a mile north downhill on the Shoefly Trail to Hogan Cabin. The trails are marked with blue diamonds.
Access 3 - Trail Creek Road #106. The Trail Creek Road is shared by snowmobiles and skiers. The parking is plowed regularly. The Trail Creek road provides the flattest route to Hogan Cabin however it is the longest at 6 miles. Skiers should anticipate snowmobiles especially on the weekends. The trail creek road leaves highway 43 approximately 6 miles east of Chief Joseph pass. The road parallels the stream in a series of open meadows. Hogan Cabin can be seen from the road in several locations at the western edge of one of the largest meadows.
