GAULEY RIVER NATIONAL RECREATION AREA was established in 1988 to preserve 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and six miles of the Meadow River as they pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of natural and cultural features. Located in southern West Virginia, this unit of the National Park System encompasses over 11,000 acres of land, and is located between the towns of Summersville and Fayetteville.
A rugged, white water river, the Gauley River provides a variety of opportunities for hiking, boating, and fishing. Whitewater is one of many popular recreational pursuits enjoyed by visitors to the park.
The park and the surrounding area are rich in cultural and natural history, and provide visitors with an incredible diversity of resources. Here, in one setting, several themes in the American story converge: Native Americans, industry and transportation, African-Americans, John Brown, the Civil War, and the natural environment. Harpers Ferry became part of the National Park System in 1944. The park covers over 2,300 acres in the states of West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. <P>Holiday Schedule: Harpers Ferry Park will be closed Christmas Day, December 25 and New Year?s Day, January 1. <P>
