Description
This lookout is remote at an elevation of 5800 feet about sea level. Winter access can range from moderate to difficult. The trip can be very ardouous, especially with a heavy snow pack and could take an entire day. Come prepared for driving in winter conditions and carry tire chains and shovel along with other essentials. Check the forcast before you begin your journey. If a low-elevation storm is predicted, you will want to park your vehicle, facing downhill, before reaching the snow zone. If you get stuck in the snow, it is your responsibility to arrange to get towed out. No animals at the lookout. No smoking inside the cabin. Remove all garbage from the area.
Directions
Drive south on I-5 from Eugene. Take the Exit for Hwy 58 east. Drive east 34 miles on Hwy 58 through Oakridge. Continue on Hwy 58 about 1 to 1.5 miles east of Oakridge. Turn right towards Hills Creek Reservoir on Kitson Springs Road and proceed .2 mile to Forest Road 21. Turn right. Follow double lane, paved, Road 21 south and southeast for approximately 18 miles. Turn left on gravel Forest Road 2129. Proceed on 2129 for 8 miles to Spur 439. (You may encounter snow before you reach 439). Turn right at this junction, follow this road for 4 Miles to the 342 spur on the left. This is the road to the lookout. The road is gated. Lookout signs along Forest Road 21 and Forest Road 2129 will help identify the routs. Orange poles identify the final route through a meadow to the lookout.
Description
From this reproduction of a fire lookout cabin, located at an elevation of 3650', enjoy a view of the Cascade mountains, mountain breezes and beautiful scenery. Within a few miles discover hiking trails and swimming holes, wildlife viewing and hunting and fishing opportunities or just relax at the cabin and enjoy the quiet surroundings.
This is a 14' X 14' cabin. There is no on-site water source. You must bring your own water. No pets allowed. No smoking is allowed in the cabin. The parking area and the outhouse is located about 300' from the cabin. A double bed with sleeping pad is provided. Bring you own linens or sleeping bags. A propane heating stove is located in the cabin; a 3-burner propane cooktop is located on the deck. There is no tower, the cabin sits slightly off the ground and is accessed by a ramp.
Directions
Total mileage from Lowell to Timber Butte Cabin is 19 miles. From Interstate 5 (I-5) take the Highway 58 East Exit 188 and travel for 13 miles toward Oakridge. Turn left off of Highway 58 at the Lowell covered bridge and proceed toward the town of Lowell. At the 4-way junction in Lowell, turn left unto Boundary Road. Take the next right (Moss Street) for two miles to the crossroads of Unity, where you'll see another covered bridge. Do not cross it. Rather, Turn right (east) onto Big Fall Creek Road and proceed for .5 mile. Turn right onto Winberry Road. Continue east on Winberry Road for 12.8 miles. Turn left onto Forest Service (FS) Road 1821. Continue 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Road 1821168. Proceed 1 mile. Turn right onto Road 1816175. Proceed 100 yards. Turn left onto Road 1816131 (gated entrance road to the cabin). Cabin parking is located about 1 mile up Road 1816131, adjacent to the toilet building.
