SAN MIGUEL ISLAND (CA)
Description
The westernmost of the Channel Islands receives the brunt of the northwesterly winds, fog, and severe weather from the open ocean. This extreme weather creates a harsh but profoundly beautiful environment, and the cold nutrient-rich water surrounding the island is home for a diversity of sea life. Hikers who make the all-day, ranger-guided, 16-mile round-trip hike across the island will never forget seeing one of the world's most spectacular wildlife displays over 30,000 pinnipeds hauled out on the beaches at certain times of the year. SANTA CRUZ DEL NORTE BACKCOUNTRY (CA)
Description
Backcountry camping is available year-round at the Del Norte campsite near Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. The campground is nestled in a shaded oak grove and provides scenic views of the island's pristine coastline. Warning: While backcountry camping is an incredible experience, it is not for the inexperienced backpacker. Due to difficult weather and rugged terrain, backcountry camping is an arduous endeavor and should be undertaken only by experienced, well-conditioned backpackers. Altitude: sea level to 1500 feet.
