Solanum Thessaloniki (USDA Organic) Tomato, Solanum lycopersicum 'Thessaloniki Tomato', is an heirloom tomato that comes from Greece. The large, red fruits are 3-4"" in diameter and weigh about 6 oz. with a mildly earthy, slightly acidic flavor. 'Thessaloniki' was introduced to the USA in the 1950's, and it has been popular ever since. It's very productive, and it doesn't crack. This is one of my best canning tomatoes. Tomatoes should be planted outside after the last average frost date. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes need at least 1 inch of water a week. Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. If you are growing tomatoes in a pot, use plastic because it prevents evaporation and afternoon wilts.
