Solanum Cherokee Purple (USDA Organic) Tomato), Solanum lycopersicum 'Cherokee Purple Tomato', was originally passed down from the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans and is a Tennessee Heirloom. 'Cherokee Purple' is a reliable producer of medium purple-brown fruits with darker shoulders. Fruits are round to oblong with no cracking and average 8 to 12 oz. This heirloom exhibits tolerance to mild drought as well as to common diseases. The Cherokee Purple tomatoes are absolutely delicious with a pleasantly sweet and rich flavor. Grows well in the South. Tomatoes should be planted outside after the last average frost date. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes need at least 1 inch of water a week. Soak to depth of 6 to 10 inches when watering. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. If you are growing tomatoes in a pot, use plastic because it prevents evaporation and afternoon wilts.
