Starrigavan Creek Cabin Forest Service Website Starrigavan Creek Cabin is a unique log cabin. It is first young growth log cabin on theTongass National Forest and is located within a road accessible recreation facility, Starrigavan Recreation Area. This rustic 16' x 20' log cabin is constructed of 40 year old young growth spruce logs harvested in Starrigavan Valley in 2007. Logs hand-scribed and joined by students in cabin building class at University of Alaska SE, Sitka, May 2008. Cabin replaces former campsite; shares space along Starrigavan Creek with many primitive campsites. All camping sites and cabin located amidst old growth hemlock-spruce forest. Salmonberry vegetation screens cabin from nearby campsites. Cabin and site fully ADA accessible; designed for individuals, couples, small families and the elderly, not group or organizational picnics or parties. Adjacent opportunities: 1.5 miles of ADA accessible trails, 2 miles of dirt tread trail, a 3 mile bike trail, bird watching, saltwater fishing. Brown bear roam here, it is their home. Migratory birds and waterfowl pass near area; two varieties of salmon spawn in creek late July to October. Accessing cabin on foot over snow in winter brings alive "spirit of pioneer days gone by".
Cabin site and facilities: Accommodates maximum of 8 persons on site regardless of age. Cabin and site all ADA compliant. No electricity or indoor plumbing. Heat furnished by small woodstove. Lower level includes a top and ADA bottom wood bunk with no mattresses, stairway to loft, table with 4 separate benches, counter space and small wood stove. Full loft offers floor space comfortably for 4 adult persons; no bunks in loft. Tents not allowed on cabin site. Natural light flows into loft via two gable end windows and two skylights. Access to vault restroom (no lights or running water) is 200 feet away. Water is 300 feet away at artesian well year round. Bring cots, sleeping gear, food, split dry firewood if you have it, fire starter and matches, cooking utensils, cook stove, coolers and lanterns; do not leave gear behind when vacating. Candles must be burned within a container to catch wax drippings.
Fall and Winter season access: Drive up ability limited to when there is no snow or ice. Mid November through mid April be prepared to walk in and pack gear in 1400 feet over snow or ice using skis, snowshoes and/or sleds. Motorized vehicles not allowed. Winter parking near Host Cabin at entrance to Bayside Loop. Check in time no earlier than 2 p.m. but must be done by dark which is 3 p.m. Host not available for check in at any hour of day or night. Arrivals from out of town must prearrange gaining access to cabin by contacting Recreation Area manager as listed previously.
Summer season access: May 1 through Labor Day drive up to cabin. Gates closed and locked 10 pm to 7am. During May and June daylight hours are 3 am to 10-11pm. Remainder of year, gate openings reduced with reduction in daylight hours. Check in required by contacting either Starrigavan Host, showing confirmation letter and photo ID. Check in time no earlier than 2 p.m. on first day of reservation; check out must be by noon on last day of reservation. Arrivers from out of town when gates are closed must prearrange gaining access to cabin by contacting Recreation Area manager. Contact information is listed under Alerts section.
Directions
Starrigavan Creek Cabin is located within the Starrigavan Recreation Area which is located 7 miles NE of Sitka at the end of Halibut Point Road, about 3/4 mile from the local Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal. There are no roads to Sitka. Access is by the Alaska Marine Highway or via Alaska Airlines. Upon exiting the Ferry Terminal parking lot, turn left. Drive 3/4 mile on the state Highway (also known as Halibut Point Road) or walk the same distance on the separate pedestrian walkway. The Estuary Loop where this cabin is located (in Campsite 6) is accessed by the last right hand turn before the end of the state highway. From the airport, go across the Japonski Bridge through downtown Sitka to the intersection of Sawmill Creek Road and Halibut Point Road, turn left onto Halibut Point Road which heads north 7 miles to Starrigavan Recreation Area.
