Description
The Salton Sea is the largest inland surface water body in California, and is a very productive sport fishery. The sea is also a major stop on the Pacific Flyway and supports one of the most diverse bird populations in the United States. More than 350 species frequent the sea, and up to four million birds may be found on the sea at any one time. The state park facilities include a dump station , boat launch, boat wash rack and visitor center. Within the park are 15 full hookup sites with picnic tables and barbecues, for RV's and 25 developed campsites. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Restrooms have electricity, running water and hot pay showers. At Mecca Beach there are 109 developed campsites, with restrooms, and four hookup sites with electricity and water available. Corvina Beach, Salt Creek, and Bombay Beach are primitive camping areas with chemical toilets and water. For sport fishing enthusiasts; Corvina, Croaker, Sargo, and Talapia inhabit the sea. Birdwatching and hiking on a self-guided nature trail are also very popular activities within the park. For full hookup accomodations, reservations are recommended by calling (800) 444-PARK. Restaurants, convenience stores are nearby, and maps with a brief history of the sea are available at the park.
