Description
This historic Forest Service guard station is located approximately 45 miles north of Kemmerer WY along the Big Springs Scenic Backway on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. It was constructed in 1933 and is available for reservations year-round.
The guard station has running potable water, a flush toilet, bathroom sink, shower and kitchen sink available during the summer months only, approximately May 25 to September 30. There is no running water available during winter months but there is an outhouse located behind the guard station.
The two-room cabin is equipped with propane range/oven, heater, refrigerator, lights and a wood cookstove. It sleeps 4 people on 2 bunkbeds with mattresses. NO linens or bedding are provided. Some dishes, pots, pans and utensils are provided, however the presence of these items is not guaranteed. Recommended items to bring are dish soap, dishrags, toilet paper, garbage bags and a flashlight. There is a fire pit and a picnic table outside the cabin. Firewood is provided. Summer access to the guard station is over both paved and gravel/dirt roads. Road conditions are variable and low clearance vehicles are not recommended. Winter access to the guard station is by snowmobile only. The distance from a plowed road to the guard station is approximately 10 miles.
Pets are allowed at the guard station, but no horses or livestock.
No smoking is allowed in the guard station.
Directions
From Kemmerer WY, follow US Highway 189 North to the junction of Wyoming Highway 233 / the Big Springs Scenic Backway / Ham's Fork Road. Turn left onto the Ham's Fork Road and travel approximately 38 miles (the first 19 miles of this road are paved) to the Ham's Fork Campground. Just past the campground take the left fork in the road and cross the Ham's Fork River. Travel approximately 2 1/2 miles to the Green Knoll / Forest Road 10198 junction and turn left. Travel approximately 3.8 miles to the Nugent Park / Forest Road 10069 junction and turn right. Travel approximately 0.8 miles to the Kelley Guard Station Road and turn right. The guard station is approximately 1/2 mile from the junction. From Cokeville WY, follow Wyoming Highway 232 / the Big Springs Scenic Backway approximately 12 miles to the Coal Creek Road junction. The junction is just past the end of the pavement on Wyoming 232. Turn right at the junction and follow the Coal Creek Road / Big Springs Scenic Backway. You will cross the Forest Boundary in approximately 3.5 miles. Continue on for approximately 4.75 miles to the Hobble Creek / Forest Road 10066 junction and stay to the right. Travel approximately 1 mile to the Kelley Guard Station Road and take a sharp left. The guard station is approximately 1/2 mile from the junction. Information on current road conditions and maps showing designated routes for ATV/OHV use are available at the District Offices. Visitor Use Maps may also be purchased for $10.00.
