The Iris 'Professor Blaauw', 'Iris hollandica', a fall planted bulb, is a bright and airy Dutch iris that resembles a bird in flight. Its unmatched presence is an elegant addition to any garden. The exquisite purple flowers with a touch of yellow rest atop sturdy stems. The sword-like leaves add oft-lacking vertical lines to the garden. Despite their name, these irises never grew wild in the Netherlands. Instead, they are the products of hybridization by a Dutch plant breeding firm. The flowers are 4 inches in diameter. In cold areas the Iris should be mulched in winter to protect from frost. The Iris plant is great for borders, containers, naturalizing, and cut flowers. They are deer, rabbit and squirrel resistant.
