Description
The Wilkerson Pass Visitor Center and associated facilities are critical to the first impression of South Park, as visitors travel west and retrace the Ute Indian game trails, footpaths and stagecoach line into Colorado's mountain parks. With South Park being one of the first two areas to be designated as an Official State Heritage Area by Colorado Governor Romer in 1997, it serves as a focal point for viewing and interpreting various cultural and historical resources as well as wildlife of the area. Wilkerson Pass will serve as a visitor orientation point for the following wildlife and heritage sites and other areas of interest. The Forest Service anticipates operating the center with Hosts and Volunteers. Please sign up at the Forest Service Office in Fairplay. The Forest Service*s goal is to increase public understanding, knowledge and support to improve public relations as well as to increase visitor satisfaction, provide environmental & conservation education, and to promote positive behaviors. The overall result is to obtain satisfaction while minimizing impacts to the resources of public and private lands while enjoying this beautiful scenic area. The New Center will have new vault toilets and a visitor center under a pavilion, in addition to several interior and external exhibits, with the following topics: *Welcome/Orientation *Map of Area *Native Americans *Summer/Winter Safety *Forest Management *Minerals/Mineral Discovery *Water/Watershed *Fire Management *Historic Travel-ways *Historic Ranching *Partnership Recognition *Fire Management *Pikes Peak Mtn. *Wildlife *Wetlands *Plants
