Description
Alta campground is located along the West Fork of the Bitterroot River, a popular fishing river in the area. Large yellow-barked Ponderosa Pine tower above many of the campsites which along with fir,aspen and lodgepole pine provide shade for many of the campsites. Painted Rocks Lake is locate less than 5 miles away by paved road. Wildlife in the area include, bald eagle, mule and whitetailed deer, moose, and elk along with numerous songbirds. Bighorn sheep can often be seen in the area. Sites can accommodate tents and/or RV's. Water is available at several locations within the campground. Attractions in the area include hot springs (about 18 miles on gravel road) historic ranger station (about 4 miles on paved road), and several scenic mountain peaks accessible by foot trail. Nearby Darby, MT (about 34 miles by paved road) is nearest full service city for all services (laundry,grocery store, etc) Fuel, post office and miscellaneous supplies can be found at Conner, MT about 22 miles away by paved road). From Darby Montana drive south on state highway 93 turn right on road 478 (towards Painted Rocks State Park). Campground is located on your right approximately 29 miles from this intersection.
Description
Relax in this cabin on the north shore of Lake Como, with large windows and decks overlooking the lake and near-by scenic mountain peaks. Sunsets are remarkable! To the west of the cabin, a short walk will take you to a trailhead that begins the six-mile loop trail around Lake Como. This trail is suitable for hiking, mountain biking and accessing the lake for swimming or picnics. The first ?? mile is wheelchair accessible. Approximately 3 miles from the cabin, at the west end of the lake, is a magnificent waterfall cascading over fern covered rock cliffs. From the waterfall you have the option of continuing around the lake loop trail or heading west up Rock Creek into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, part of the second largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48 states. You may see osprey, bald eagles, deer, moose, elk or bear. To the east of the cabin, a short walk will take you to a popular sandy beach and swimming area. On the south side of Lake Como there is a boat ramp and parking for trailers. The cabin is over sixty years old and provides "rustic" accommodations. It has three bedrooms, a kitchen and dining room, and a large living room that is conducive to group meetings. There is no electricity. A modern outdoor toilet is located close to the cabin. No pets are allowed. The facility is located about 2 miles north and 4 miles west of Darby, MT and is 4245' in elevation. Call the Darby Ranger Station at (406) 821-3913 for more information.
Directions
To reach Wood's Cabin, take US Hwy. 93 approximately four miles north of Darby, Montana. Turn west on County Route 82 (Lake Como Road) and follow it approximatley four miles to the Lake Como National Recreation Area. Follow signs to the swimming area on the north side of Lake Como and continue past the swimming area parking lot to the third parking area. A gate on the west side of this parking area secures the driveway into both the Wood's Cabin and the adjacent privately permitted Hiker's Cabin. Take the left-hand fork to the Wood's Cabin. The combination lock on the gate is changed regularly and renters will need to call the Darby Ranger Station one week prior to reservations for current combinations.
