Directions
From Interstate 64, take exit 35 and go southwest on state road 776 (old route 60) for 2.1 miles. Turn left at the entrance road to Longdale Recreation Area (large sign) and go 0.5 miles to the third parking area on the right. A footpath on the left side of the parking area leads to the Longdale Picnic Shelter.
Description
This picnic shelter is located within the Coles Point Recreation Area and is part of the larger Lake Moomaw Recreation Area. On the Alleghany County side of the lake, there are two fishing docks, two boat ramps, a swimming beach with a bathhouse, and two reservable picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for hiking, photography, nature study, bird watching, and viewing wildlife.
Coles Point Picnic Shelter #2, located in a small opening surrounded by a hardwood forest, has about 8 picnic tables on a concrete pad under roof, with several additional picnic tables scattered under the nearby trees. There are two large group barbecue grills, one available electrical outlet for small cooking appliances, and space available for outdoor games. A hiking trail at the shelter leads to a small fishing dock and provides access to bank fishing along the shore of Lake Moomaw. The shelter is served by a flat walkway from the parking area, but is otherwise not considered to be fully wheelchair-accessible. No overnight camping is allowed. The picnic shelters are closed from sundown to sunup.
The site can accomodate a maximum of 50 people and the parking area will hold about 20 vehicles. The Coles Point Beach and Coles Point Boat Ramp are about 0.2 mile away. To use the beach and boat ramp, visitors will need to pay an additional $3.00/vehicle day use fee at one of the self-service pay stations (iron rangers).
The 2,530-acre Lake Moomaw offers fishing for large and smallmouth bass, brown trout, bluegill, crappie, shad, catfish, sunfish, and chain pickerel. A state fishing license is required, but no National Forest stamp is required to fish Lake Moomaw. The license can be acquired from vendors in nearby Covington or elsewhere in Virginia. Boats with gasoline motors up to 25 feet long are permitted on the lake. Canoes, kayaks, sailboats, and personal watercraft are also allowed. You must bring your own boat - there are none for rent on the Alleghany County side of the lake. Fishing from the banks of the lake is popular. The swimming area has no lifeguards, so visitors swim at their own risk. Visitors to the National Forest are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations of the Forest and the area they are visiting. Additional information can be obtained by calling the James River District office at 540-962-2214. Office hours are 8 am through 4:30 pm (Eastern time) Monday through Friday.
The nearest groceries and gas are located in Covington, Virginia about a 30 minute drive from the lake. Mobile phone service is not reliable due to the area location, but a pay phone is available at Fortney Branch Boat Ramp. Some mobile phones work at the nearby Morris Hill Campground.
America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes are not applicable for the picnic shelter fee.
Directions
From Interstate 64, take exit 16A or 16B. At bottom of ramp, follow signs to go north onto U.S. 220 for about 5.6 miles. Then turn left (north) onto State Route 687 for about 3.2 miles. Then turn left onto State Route 641/666 North for 4.2 miles. At the three-way intersection, turn right on state road 605, and travel 4.5 miles, past the Morris Hill Campground entrance, the US Army Corps of Engineers facilities, across the Gathright Dam, past Coles Point Picnic Shelter #1, and past the Coles Beach and Boat Ramp. Coles Point Picnic Shelter #2 will be on the right.
