Description
BLACK MOUNTAIN CABIN is a remote 8 person cabin located on the west sideof Black Mountain in what was once pastureland. Access to the cabin is via 1.4 mile trail used for hiking and backcountry skiing in the winter. The cabin is very rustic and the only amenities are eight wooden bunks, two small tables in the "common area", benches and a wood stove. You should bring your own firewood. There is a vault toilet a short distance from the cabin. There is a spring nearby but it is unreliable and water would need to be filtered or treated. The cabin was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Special Winter Warning: This cabin is an un-insulated log cabin. When renting the cabin in the colder months expect winter conditions and be prepared with winter gear. The temperatures inside the cabin can often mimic the exterior temps. Be prepared for a camping trip, you can just leave the tent at home. DON'T MOVE FIREWOOD
Our forests are threatened by nonnative insects that can kill large numbers of trees. Three recently introduced insects-emerald ash borer, Asian long horned beetle, and Sirex woodwasp- are wood-infesting species that can be transported long distances in firewood. Once transported into new areas, these insects can become established and kill local trees. We must STOP THE SPREAD of these insects and protect our forests and trees.
HOW CAN YOU HELP: Leave firewood at home-do not transport it to cabins or campgrounds. Use firewood from local sources. If you have moved firewood, burn all of it before leaving.
Directions
From NH Route 16 in Jackson, turn onto 16A. At the Wentworth Hotel turn right onto 16B. Follow 16B, straight, which turns into Carter Notch Road for 3.9 miles. Take a right onto Melloon Road to the parking area. The parking area and first part of the trail lies on private and Town land, please respect the private property rights. The cabin is 1.4 miles via a moderate grade.
