Description
Located next to Maroon Creek and offering spectacular views of aspen and evergreen forests, East Maroon Portal Picnic Site serves as a gathering spot for families, groups, or wedding receptions. This picnic area is available for use by the general public, but can be reserved for private events for a use fee of $75.00. This is the ONLY site available in the Maroon Bells Scenic Area for wedding receptions.
The picnic area has 3 large picnic tables. Group size limit is 75 people, for a maximum of four hours at the site.
East Maroon Creek and Maroon Creek trails are located next to the picnic area and offer a portal into the Maroon Bells -Snowmass Wilderness.
Vehicle traffic is RESTRICTED on Maroon Creek Road from 9:00am until 5:00pm past the Maroon Bells Welcome Station, most personal vehicles are not allowed to continue past this point during these hours. Individuals who reserve this picnic site are issued 5 vehicle passes which allows travel in a motorized vehicle past the Maroon Bells Welcome Station. If all persons attending your event do not fit into 5 vehicles you have a few options to get everyone to the picnic site. You can have people park their cars at Aspen Highlands Ski Area and ferry them from Aspen Highlands in cars possessing vehicle permits. You can rent one or more high occupancy vehicles. Otherwise, those attending your event can ride the Maroon Bells Shuttle Bus from 9:00am until 5:00pm for a fee of $6.00 per adult, $3.00 per child/senior.

Coming to Aspen via Independence Pass: Take Highway 82 West from downtown Aspen 1 mile to the roundabout (rotary). From the roundabout, take Maroon Creek Road 4.7 miles to the Maroon Bells Welcome Station. You will pass Aspen High school and Aspen Highlands Ski Area on the way to the welcome station, which is staffed from 7am to 6pm for you to check in and confirm reservations. Once checked in, continue past the welcome station, and East Maroon Portal is 2 miles beyond on the left hand side.
Independence Pass (Highway 82) is normally open from Memorial Day through mid-October, weather dependant. If you are planning an event during these times, please call the Colorado Department of Transportation Hotline for road updates at (877) 315-7623.
Coming to Aspen via Glenwood Springs: Take Highway 82 for 40 miles to the roundabout (rotary). From the roundabout, take Maroon Creek Road 4.7 miles to the Welcome Station. East Maroon Portal is 2 miles beyond on the left hand side.
East Maroon Portal Picnic Site is approximately 6.5 miles from Highway 82 at the roundabout.
Description
This amphitheatre is located near Maroon Lake, and offers a spectacular view of the lake and the Maroon Bells. It is designed for interpretive talks, and is extremely popular for recreation events and weddings. Receptions are not allowed at this location. 65 people for a maximum of 4 hours are permitted. Toilet facilities, drinking fountains and a visitor information center are nearby. Parking is 200 yards away at the day parking area. Disabled parking is available 50 yards away. Transportation is restricted to bus travel from 9am-5pm from the middle of June through Labor Day as well as Friday-Sat-Sundays in September. Wedding parties will get 5 vehicle access passes included in the $200 fee. These can be picked up prior to the event at the Maroon Bells Welcome Station. Other vehicles and guests will need to park at Aspen Highlands and either ride a RFTA bus for $6/person, leaving every 20 minutes from Aspen Highlands, or you may charter a bus or Limo for your group.
